National Voters Day observed

Yebilaptsa Middle Secondary School observed the ‘National Voters Day’ on the theme ‘Youth in Democracy’ coinciding with International Democracy Day on 15th September, 2014.

The programme began with   National anthem, followed by welcome speech by Dzongkhag Electoral officer In-charge who also read out the message from the office of Election Commission of Bhutan.

 The occasion was graced by chief guest Dr.Sonam KeLzang of Yebilaptsa Hospital, who also reinforced on the importance of the day. Enthusiastic students, representing the youth shared their thoughts on, ‘The Bhutanese Democracy of my dreams’ in Dzongkha and English.

There was awarding of VPIC to few eligible youth voters of coming age and the students took the national voter’s day pledge. Some cultural programs were also included to enliven the programme.

Later students were educated with EVM demonstration and some selected students were given opportunity to do it in practical while electing the school vice-captain. Postal voting procedure with visual screening and ECB journey science inception was also presented to gathering. To encourage the youth participation in future and prepare them in election procedures, voters’ guides were distributed.

To mark the importance of day, Democracy club in collaboration with Media Literacy club, organised the inter-class wise banner competition on the theme of the day. The banners prepared by the students were evaluated in democratic way based on criteria set by the coordinators. The judges were members of Yebiaptsa hospital and Tingtibi Lower Secondary staff. A debate competition was also held among the four houses (Jigme, Khesar, Namgay and Wangchuk) on the topic: ‘Are the Students of today prepared to be the future voters of Bhutan?’

The winners of the banner competition and debate were awarded with cash prizes and token of appreciation. The programme ended with concluding remark by the chief guest.
